Has anyone read the new book by Mark Ford 'Soft Sift'
which is a Gerard Manley Hopkins quote, for all you
pop quizzers.
'Soft Sift/in an hourglass'
His work has been described as being like Ashberry's
which would figure as they seem to have similiar glee
in the face of the diversity of languages, also
similar litery heritage too Perec,Roussell et al:
Plan Nine
The dreadful telephone again: gentle as a kitchen
He'd walk through snow to lay his wreath or convey
Misgivings. The signal fades, freeing me to crawl
Through cold Friday, to forage amid the shadows cast
By a reckless crowd to brittle soap-opera characters.
Our bodies drag, halt mesmerized, lurch forward
With a yelp. 'What's the story, morning glory?'
Inquires the super, whose reign of terror
And mind like glue leaves less than ever
To be desired. I drink my Rhenish, though it tastes
Of poison, and attack with everything
Until at last the bugle sounds. Briskly, beyond
These streaming drapes, a caustic voice unfolds the
case
To a clutch of bright-eyed interns: no mohair, no
alcohol,
Lots of plain yogurt certainly, no foreign languages,
no tete-a-tete.
'When I heard'
after Charles d'Orleans
When I heard the alarm
Urging us to gather may
I made no effort to stir
To lift my head from the pillow
Saying to myself, its early
I may as well sleep on
When I heard the alarm
Young people share their finds
Unconcern is my friend
I'll share with him forever
He, he was my neighbour
When I heard the alarm.
sorry no accents on this email
Ford has written a wonderful biography of Raymond
Roussell which which has really turn me to interest in
that puckish Proust of a writer. I would recommend it
to anyone
Has anyone read Landlocked his first book?
