The competition brings out the worst in people. Though the judges are
supposed to be independent and chosen at random we found at a local slam
that some contestants were packing the audience with friends in the hope
that they would be picked as judges.
Even when ringers have not been resorted to, contestants also packed the
audiences with friends who cheered and whistled and hooted loudly when they
were performing. Even though the judges are supposed to be independent they
are often swayed by audience reaction.
A team was removed from the National Slams last year for some such
unspecified hanky panky.
Like you, I say just let them read the poems!
