Since a few listees have already back-channeled me for Jewish genealogical
sites, I thought I'd just post a list here in case anyone else can use it
too. I've avoided paid sites (I think) and put together a mix of academic
and non-, expository and link-listing, US and elsewhere. The first
3--JewishGen, RootsWeb, and Cyndi's List--I'd highly recommend for the
richness and the reputability of their resources. I don't know anything
against any of the others, but some I don't know at all (yet), as I've been
collecting URLs myself for awhile and haven't checked them all out. The
About.Com sites (there are a slew of them just for JewishGen alone, and you
can link up with from the pair I'm provided) tend to be good portals, but
are pretty bland otherwise. The woman who serves as the main "genealogy
guide," Kimberly Powell (http://genealogy.about.com/index.htm) seems very
knowledgeable, and she's done two series of "top 25 free genealogy sites"
that I found very useful and reliable. One other general thing to note about
these genealogy sites in particular is that many can't resist offering
something food-related along with the usual Gen gen, so don't go there
hungry!

JewishGen: The Home of Jewish Genealogy <http://www.jewishgen.org>
and its affiliate: IAJGS - International Association of Jewish
Genealogical Societies <http://www.jewishgen.org/ajgs>
and its highly respected journal for German-Jewish genealogical
research, _Stammbaum_ <http://www1.jewishgen.org/stammbaum/
and its associated "consolidated Jewish surname index" at the Avotaynu
site <http://www.avotaynu.com/csi/csi-home.html> (Avotaynu is the best place
to start a Jewish surname search both because the database there is so large
and because its Soundex function is among the better ones--I always run the
names I'm searching through twice, once with and once without Soundex.)
Cyndi's List - Jewish <http://www.cyndislist.com/jewish.htm> (an excellent
site for all sorts of genealogical researches--this is what Cyndi does, and
she does it very well--prepare to be overwhelmed!)
Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Jewish Mailing
Lists<http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail_jewish.html> (John Fuller is
alleged to have a good "Austrian-Holocaust" AOL site as well, but I don't
have a link for that one. Both AOL and Yahoo have pretty good genealogy
resources that non-members can access too.)
And here's a RootsWeb/WorldGenWeb site from which you can link to all
the others: PolandGenWeb <http://www.rootsweb.com/~polagen/polandgen.html
Here are a few more About.Com sites:
Russian Jewish Genealogy

Middle Eastern Countries
<http://genealogy.about.com/cs/middleeast/index.htm>
And--just for Mark: <http://brooklyn.about.com/cs/genealogy/index.htm>
(every time I run across a JewishGen site advertising "heraldry," I think of
those chickens on your coat of arms!)

least):

the life of me remember what it IS called, so don't flame me all at once!)
