Another must see for poetry fans, would have to be the film - The Monkey's
Mask, based on Dorothy Porter's verse novel. I read the book back in my uni
days (in three nights) and when the film came out, couldn't wait to see it.
It's an excellent film by Samantha Lang who did Elizabeth Jolley's - The
Well (another great Oz film/book). For those poetryetcers outside Australia,
we hope that the film comes to you as it's worth the effort to search it
out. The film stars Susie Porter and Kelly McGillis, directed by Samantha
Lang and Produced by Robert Connolly and John Maynard (thanks also to the
Australian Film Finance Corporation!) It is truly a very intelligent, adult
and clever adaptation of Dorothy Porter's brilliant verse novel. Porter
wrote this detective thriller around the Sydney poetry reading scene. What
is remarkable about the story is the interweaving of her poetry on the page
(also how the film intertwines poetry) and the raw poetry of the angst,
confessional poet who goes missing in the story. So as the story goes.. the
protagonist, Jill Fitzpatrick, is the PI investigating Mickey's (the angst
poet) disappearance.
I went out and bought the book and re-read it after the film. The light
globe went off, when I discovered, after the film's erotic visuals, exactly
what Porter was referring to....suffocation orgasm! My god where had I been.
Hope I have wet your poetry appetite. It's a must see and a must read.
Congratulations to Dorothy Porter for this hybrid literature that has me
inspired!
Helen
