Under the rather unusual circumstances, I think it is perfectly appropriate
to share this post from David H. with the List. My response is immediately
below, followed by his.

David,
Well, now we may be getting somewhere, even though in this case, the
"goodbye" strikes me as the so-long of a coward. Don't go. We might just be
getting going...
Tell me more about what you mean by "renouncing authority." I take it you
are refering to Yasusada. If so, I have to say that I'd see the very
premises of your Law as irrelevant from the get-go. The Yasusada does not
renounce authority, either in practice or theory. But maybe your statement
is just too short for me to understand what you really mean. Could you
expand?
And I find the reference to the "ruling class" fascinating and worth
pursuing. In relation to this, it might be useful to talk about "authority"
in relationship to Peter Burger's ideas about ruling culture and the
"Institution Art" (remember when you sent me that first postcard in response
to my poem about the corpse and the Museum?) I have some thoughts on
dynamics of authorship/authority and their relations to notions of hegemony,
and all that. I could try to offer some things. But if you could elaborate a
bit more, it would help us to get underway.
Who the hell cares? Judging from the bibliography, quite a few people do,
right? And, after all, it's why you came on in such sudden rage...
*Something,* apparently, makes you care.
In any case, my ideas are always evolving on these matters. Now take on your
critic persona, and help me to better understand.
Back to you.
