NEW TITLES - DARK HORTSEY BOOKSHOP

Ghost Nation Laurie Duggan
PRICE $22.95 * UQP
Wonderfully readable account of the imaginary space - or the imagined
space - that Australia was for artists, designers, architects here in
20th Century, and an account of the shifting dynamics & ideological &
aesthetic pressures that transformed the shape this 'Australia' took up to
the Post War period. Highly recommended - for its intelligence, humour,
economy, lateral research across various disciplines.

Painting By Numbers Komar & Melamid
PRICE $75 * University of California
Komar & Melamid's scientific guide to art - art made to order, customized
to the demand of public opinion: pictures dishwasher size, as preferred by
67%, with the most preferred subject matter, colouring, styles etc. Same
for Europe, SE Asia, Africa & so on. "An estrangement too far"? (to quote
Bamber Gascoigne) - or "killingly funny" (Peregrine Worsthorne)? But,
seriously, what's wrong with your art, buddy? Right? Point taken? Then
- Look & learn! (Bob Hawke).

Subjects Of Desire Judith Butler
PRICE $57 * Columbia
The classic text amongst recent American scholars on the survivals of Hegel
in contemporary thought (France's particularly). One theme is that French
thought has distorted Hegel's so that the idealism that the French have
denied there has resulted in a kind of return of the pre-Hegelian, "even
the pre-Kantian" & a commitment to an 'im-mediate realism' that, in une
ironie triste, the idealist tradition "was to have finished off".

Spectre of Comparisons Benedict Anderson
PRICE $42 * Columbia Uni Press * import
Nationalism, Southeast Asia & the World. Best known for his classic book
on nationalism, Imagined Communities, here Anderson explores the effects of
nationalism-under-pressure as they work their way through politics &
culture. Anderson looks closely at East Timor & Indonesia, at Thailand &
the Philippines - in their various attempts to quell, control or harness
nationalism - all in an age of migrating populations and workforces.

Carried Away Rachel Bowlby
PRICE $26 * faber & faber
the invention of modern shopping - Bowlby looks at some of the turning
points of 20th-century consumer history: when department stores gave way to
supermarkets; when packaging made everyday things objects of desire; the
advent of self-service: the history, the hidden meanings, the brute facts
- of shopping - the ecstasy, the waste, the politics.

The Language Of Inquiry Lyn Hejinian
PRICE $55 * Uni of California
A large (400+ pages) compendium of Hejinian's theory: essays, critique,
meditations, aphorisms, lectures & aesthetically speculative poetry.
The Lovemakers Alan Wearne
PRICE $27 * Penguin
Alan Wearne's The Nighmarkets is now justly regarded as a classic - in
fact it was seen as such pretty much from the first week of its publication
- one of the earliest & perhaps the uniquely successful Australian verse
novel. It had been anticipated for many years. As has The Lovemakers.
Wearne's verse novels employ a style that is artificial while at the same
time focused on kinds of realism. And it delivers. These works capture
whole periods & interconnected milieux, accurately, and record their
typical styles of ethics, politics and the social pressures that give rise
to them. What soap opera & mini-series could only dream of doing.

EAF YEARBOOK 2000
PRICE $15 * Experimental Art Foundation
an account of the foundation's activities, including exhibitions by: kevin
henderson, simryn gill, ann shelton, Heterogeneous Loves, james angus,
shaun kirby, sally smart, james dodd, yoko kajio, tim sterling, peter
harding, kate stryker, larissa hjorth, jason keats.

The Rebirth of Painting in the Late Twentieth Century Donald Kuspit
PRICE $54.95 * CUP
A continuation of Kuspit's case against seeing contemporary art as
irreducibly cool, Minimalist-infected & drily conceptual. Though painting
can be those things Kuspit is here clearly seeing the Return to Painting as
supplying an enrichment of the avant-garde, an access to more
'psychological' & 'spiritual' areas.

The Sonnets Ted Berrigan
PRICE $39 * Penguin USA * import
Back in print again. Berrigan's sonnets were instantly influential &
liberating for young writers & have remained so right through the 60s, 70s
to today. The sonnets is a sequence that constantly cannibalizes &
recycles itself & the effects are poignant, hilarious, energizing,
beautiful, surprising & somehow permanently contemporary. Stronger than
alcohol, more great than song! A kind of Cubism, a kind of Pop Art, but
lyrical & made of words. One of this shop's favourite books.

Collected Poems John Forbes
PRICE $26.95 * Brandl & Schlesinger
Out this month, the poems of the late great John Forbes. Who wrote better?
None, that's who. And good for you - smarter, faster, funnier, more
corrosive, pithy & with-it than all.

High Country Cassie Lewis
PRICE $11 * Little Esther books
Debut book title from this Melbourne poet now resident in the USA. Her
work has been taken up in all the latest Australian anthologies - both
Calyx & New Music. The book comes highly recommended - by Peter Minter,
among others.

The Wallah Group Ken Bolton & John Jenkins
PRICE $11 * Little Esther books
Inane? Faux profond? A 'work of geniuses'? More collaboratively written
pieces from the 'new superpersons of Australian verse' (Meaghan Morris).

False Narratives Ruark Lewis
PRICE $24 * NMA
An artist's book to accompany Lewis's exhibition in Adelaide, Wollongong &
Melbourne this year.

OK You Mugs ed Luc Sante & Melissa Holbrook Pierson
PRICE $27.95 * Granta
writers on movie actors - some good writers, too: essays on Mitchum, Dan
Duryea, Thelma Ritter, on Sidney Greenstreet & other fat-man anti-heroes;
on Jeanne Moreau (by Patti Smith), Tom & Jerry (by Ron Padgett), 'The
Decline of the Actor' (by Manny Farber); Richard Rorty on Dom DeLuise,
Georges Bataille on George Brent; plus Dana Andrews, Liz Taylor, Robert
Carlysle & many more.

Don't Just Surf The Net Maureen Henninger
PRICE $21 * UNSW
second successful edition! Effective Research Strategies for the net.
You're a little bookish, right? That's okay, isn't it? Sure, but you'd
like to be more hip - who can blame you? - & less lost. Buy this!

Selected Poems Pierre Reverdy
PRICE $44 * Wake Forest University * import
Mystically intense, silence on the point of oracular ennunciation. Hailed
by Breton as "the greatest poet of the time". Translations by John
Ashbery, Mary Ann Caws & Patricia Terry. Neat-o.

Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom Gary Indiana
PRICE $32 * bfi
An essay on Pasolini's last film - a treatment of De Sade's novel
re-located to Fascist Italy.

Period Dennis Cooper
PRICE $27.95 * Grove Press * import
called "the most important transgressive literary artist since Burroughs"
- this is Cooper's most recent novella: the usual artfully refined mix of
Satanism, pornography, outsider cool - hip, blank & yearning - &
curiously nostalgic.
