Laura, that's ok. I feel better now, as it did strike me my email could
appear to be a hoax if taken out of context.
However, if you have deleted the file then I am afraid that you need to
reinstall it, as Windows needs it to function properly.
The thought of having a virus stealing or destroying my work has and does
worry me.I too now keep paper copies of anything important and back up files
to cd's via re-writable cds, etc.
Robin, Yes, I understand that Norton and McAffee will identify and
quarantine the virus version of this file. However, it is always worth
updating the virus definitions.
Don't worry about the file having its own icon: it is supposed to: I scanned
my iconed file a few days ago with Norton; submitted it to Symantec
(Norton's virus research laboratory) and they confirmed the file was a safe
system file.
I also agree that lists in general are fairly safe these days, providing you
have a virus checker and a firewall and don't open attachments. It is
perhaps worth noting that this is the first major hoax virus email to hit
the UK: they are more common on chat programs like ICQ...
