I only wish I had their skills, creativity, sense of fun, style and
dedication. I mean, I have seriously fallen in love with these young rascals.
they can hack me any day (well, the boys, that is.)

yeahh, precisely why I decided to ask on this list.
I have taught myself Linux, gnu and unix software so I have a fairly high end
understanding of computers. (A quarter century of use now, from working in
publishing.) I might dig out an old version of sendmail and try some of the
buffer overrun attacks on my system, to see if I can get a root shell, since
I like the sound of this one, poetry wise.

Yeahh, looks very much like I have stumbled yet again onto the forbidden
ground. I find, having worked as a professional writer in illegal areas
before (like illegal drugs) that the best policy is be open and honest about
your research. I mean, if I was seriously into cracking systems, I certainly
would not be stupid enough to post to a public mailing list. My ISP is fairly
good and linked to my university account, so no probs, there, btw.
As for the porn sites. . . too late I have already seen the hacked sites. I
also found the illegal ones. . . I am very difficult to shock but when a
large jpeg came onto my screen of what looked like two five year olds having
sex, I did have to blink twice. Unix.com contains warnings to some of its
hacking stuff saying these are explicit and may shock. Made the hacking stuff
sound like internet smut. An interesting connection, here. (The aesthetics of
some of this Lolita porn is interesting. . . anyone know Edward Weston's
portrait of his ten year old son? The classical pose, for example. And the
amateur stuff breaks just about every rule of photographic composition and
lighting I was ever taught.)

Groovy, cool and grok are all over the place, again. I had a mispent youth
reading Proust, Genet, Marx and every new poetry journal and chap book I
could find. Sci-fi and cyberpunk could well be my mid age crisis!
Much and many thanks for taking the time to respond to my queries. They
certainly were of great help. I have also swung around somewhat to looking at
the hacking cultures as a result of responses.
Chris Jones.
