All you fellow antitheists and atheists out there might enjoy this:
Debriefing
"You knew this, Winston," said O'Brien. "Don't delude yourself. You have
always known it."
- Orwell
There is a God. I find myself
still on a bed or gurney,
hooked up to machines,
in pain (it seems unfair)
and nauseous. Still,
I'd know Him anywhere.
You must imagine:
He combines Liberace,
Lugosi's Dracula, and
The Terminator.
(Not Schwarzenegger -
the thing inside.)
Seeing Him I cry, "Did you get
that last bit?"
He shrugs: "Reception was bad."
(As always, He
half-implies
it was my fault.)
"Did you record
Mother's agony?
Did you notice
Rwanda, Bhopal, the whole litany - "
"We did," says God, and His smile
is as nice as can be.
"Did you draw any conclusions?"
He asks. "Provisional, of course … "
I have prepared this
in advance: "Nothing is lost
but nothing stands out.
Subtlety *becomes malicious.
It's a question of medium."
He doesn't like it, but
waits till I'm finished,
draws near in that outfit, and
- you already know this -
turns me off.
