Er, I think that was Liz's point (Liz?).
hmmmm yes - I am a bit slow catching up with this, (the work week
intervening) but I have been considering it
I like the formulation 'writing is reading'
bit as to the other - speech is the primary form, writing proceeds from it
- attempts to construct descriptions of language that assumed the opposite
ended up in impossible positions, attempting to impose inappropriate 'laws'
on what could be said, mainly based on Latin, like the notions that
infinitives should not be wantonly split (- these thoughts an addition to
what Chris has said)
that was a colonisation if you like
my point that 'reading is essential before writing is possible' was more a
reflection about the honour and attention we should pay - as makers of
language - to those who have gone before, and those who work alongside us.
I accept that some chose to work outside the institutions of formal
'writing' in many different ways. And bravo! But they too emerge from a
context that needs to be read
to think it is possible to work outside of that history/present is
ignorant
Liz
