I think your sense of THE HITCHHIKER' GUIDE as a comic epic is right on,
Chris, and, given its origins in radio, it can even be twisted and spun into
a post-literate _oral_ comic epic. DR WHO, on the other hand, raises
interesting questions about identity of the kind that preoccupy
Anglo/American philosophy besides pushing the envelope of epic's definitive
unique hero/protagonist.
As for your allusion to I, CLAUDIUS in "book form," I like to think you
meant Tacitus rather than Graves--given your wicked sense of humor!
