I think it plays big in Canada because we are like Australia a

likewise. we run second to canada in accepting would-be refugees - but in
recent times it has certainly escalated. the media beats-up these 'boat
people' stories, whereas the vast majority of 'illegal immigrants' come in
by plane with a visa, then disappear before their visa runs out. a
complicated situation. the tampa was a bit of a special case ... we have a
continuing conflict with indonesia over their passive involvement with
people smugglers.
