Erminia,
I don't know who those b-c sourpusses were who told you the translation was
terrible, but I thought much of it read beautifully. (Many years ago I
learned enough Italian to be able to order a meal or get directions, but
even that has long since faded, alas.) Anyway, I find particularly
impressive the way the poem indicates the existence of a larger world
surrounding the personal experiences that are related. That is, the poem is,
in the best sense, philosophical.
