Too much dyspepsia already for my liking, and me so young and genial. I
can't get over the fact that I wasn't like that at their age: nobody I
respected was like that. Too many of the students I've taught have been the
sorts of people I loathed when I was their age. I've just about grown out of
the loathing, but I don't think I've yet managed to grow into anything else.
