Many years ago, I came across the beautiful poem "Black Marigolds" -
translated from the Sanskrit of Chauras(Chaura-panchasika, 1st century) by
Powys Mathers, in Love Songs of Asia, Knopf, 1946.
This poem was also extensively quoted in Steinbeck's "Cannery Row".
And sometimes we look to the end of the tale that
there should be marriage-feasts, and find only, as it
were, black marigolds and a silence.
---Azeddin el Mocadecci
Does anyone know anything about the history of this translation?
I have the full text version, but no history.
