Thanks for that link, Alison. I couldn't help but notice how 'comic' the
list of events almost was, I mean, that Heroin was originally marketed by
Bayer as 'non-addictive' (!)
I think it is very much a matter of looking at the poisons in one's world
and thinking out which are the worst, a matter which moral attitudinising
forgets. I would love a life free of addictions, but the variability and
stress of just being human seems to demand resort in one way or another. I'm
sure there's a side to poetry that is psychologically akin to physical
addiction, my own bad habits are all legal too, but I guess I could say I
have a love-hate relationship with them.
