“Tramp and full orchestra”
I want to give you more
than a cold hour
take this gem
breathe in the night
close your eyes
and watch how a white ship sails
towards a sleepless harbour
in quietness
feel how this north breeze blows
to soothe dry lips
and so mine tremble
not born to shame
on this rough earth
see how the heart can sing
under an arched sky
while I watch you
lying alone
in the rigour of our laws
and I will give you more
than a brief note
a bet
a loop repeating
tender
that Jesus’ blood
has never
failed you
yet
This poem is an homage to the musician Gavin Bryars and his
“Jesus never failed me yet. Full orchestra with singing tramp”.
