American, is the author of TURNING JAPANESE: MEMOIRS
OF A SANSEI, which was listed in the New York Times
1991 Notable Books of the Year and won a Josephine
Miles Book Award from the Oakland PEN. His second
memoir, WHERE THE BODY MEETS MEMORY: AN ODYSSEY OF
RACE, SEXUALITY AND IDENTITY, was published in 1996.
