MYSTERIES, the latest Keene/Taylor Theatre Project season, closes on
Saturday, so anyone in Melbourne who hasn't seen it and might be
interested should put it in their diaries - it's been booking out, so
it's advisable to book. By Daniel Keene, directed by Ariette Taylor,
with a cast which includes 20 extras. On at the Beckett Theatre at the
Malthouse.
As I said in an earlier post, I think poets might find it of especial
interest. It's a top flight cast who give some truly amazing
performances - Robert Menzies, Monica Maughan, Dan Spielman, Lewis
Fiander, Gary Files, Evelyn Krape, Marion Heathfield and Chloe Armstrong.
The direction and design are stunning. The text is fragmentary,
disturbing, beautiful, resonant and at times heart breaking, and has
puzzled some of our best critical minds, who keep calling it "poetic".
Which it is, but maybe not in the senses they might mean.
I went again last night. I believe it's some of the most deeply human
theatre you'll see, and it opens the possibilities of theatre and
language in ways which are rare here. Even those who've seen it and
hated it can't stop thinking about it. I'd love to see some responses,
if anyone gets there.
best
