Actually, I'm told the thing to do if your life is threatened is call the
police. The number of your local police station ought to be in the
telephone book. If it's an +immediately+ life-threatening situation, I
think you're even allowed to dial 999 (911 in America).
When (assuming the situation is immediate) you dial 999, you'll be asked
which emergency service you wish to be connected to -- Fire, Police, or
Ambulance? Please try to answer this question coherently -- it +does+
matter. While the operator is connecting you to the appropriate emergency
service, he (or she) will ask you what number you are calling from. Bear
with them. (I know this can sometimes be difficult if a maniac with a
machette is chasing you round the room, but take it from me, there are good
reasons. And while you are gasping out the number you are phoning from, the
operator will simultaneously be connecting you.)
Anyway, I hope these little words will assist you in your current parlous
situation.
