Don't know how you could call it xenophobia, Jill -
didn't Mr Howard say we're leading the world in
producing litres of the milk of human kindness?
I have to say that there have been few government
stuff ups (probably the last time was the pathetic
"policy" towards the East Timorese elections, which
any moron could see were going to lead to disaster -
at least I could, and I'm not especially savvy) that
has upset me as much as this one.
Maybe it's because of the strong public support for
Howard's"stand". But what scares me - quite apart
from the ethical question - is that Howard seems to
have entered this particular minefield in a mindset
which goes better with parish pump politics than the
contemporary global, complex and fissile world. Scary?
Terrifying!
Good to see that that wealthy nation Nauru is helping
us out in our difficulties.
Best
Alison
