Femininity in Poetry:
Femininity in poetry without any reference to sex (of any kind.) written by
men, or even by women.
Can male poets achieve a true feminine quality in their poetry? Can men even
comprehend from a woman's perceptive - no matter how sensitive they can be.
When you think of woman, the words that come to mind are:
Gentleness
Softness
Womanhood
Womanliness
Sensitivity
Kindness
Mother
Feminine
Beautiful
Virtue
Grace
Effeminate
…yet for all these good words that a thesaurus will give, there is that
Madonna/Whore complex that is given to women which the female sex - not the
male sex -own, like: slut, bitch, whore, original sinner, and much more.
Since for every female out there this is a sensitive subject, I'll steer
clear of this before I rant for hours which will only result in thousands of
words and a pissed off poster. But still, the Madonna/Whore complex is
something the male has never had to experience, so how could he be a
sympathizer, especially when the comparable words used for a man are along
the lines of stud, ladies man, lady killer, and the north american slang
"the Man".
Men and woman are now considered equal, but does the female gender stand
alone in owning a grace and softness that can never be duplicated only
matched in a males masculinity? I've read poems written by females that have
a unisex, or even masculine, feeling to it. These poems have steered clear
of sex, love, the body, and gender specific interests. Now, I'm a female
reading a females work, not a male reading this, so my position on this
might be bias. Yet, from most of the poetry I have read, written by men or
women, I seldom come across a satisfactory representation of femininity.
That could be because it not only has to have this quality but I must also
like it.
As an artist that writes and paints, if I were to give my art a sex I would
have to say it's feminine. I don't try to be unisex or masculine, or
feminine for that matter, maybe I just happen to be very girly. Being
"girly" or feminine isn't considered safe in the arts, it's "taboo", so why
isn't it taken up eagerly like the other controversial subjects in society.
Anyways, to cut myself off before I write anymore, what is your take on
modern writers and femininity, and can men write like a women. Will each
gender forever write for their own sex? And what poets or poems have a true
feminine quality to it?
