new movie has a poet + a poetry teacher as characters -
the book that inspired the movie was a novel in verse
THE MONKEY'S MASK
to open on July 27, 2001
at the Quad Cinemas in New York City
The film is adapted from the verse novel by Dorothy Porter, which has
acquired an international cult reputation since its publication in 1995 and
is subtitled "an erotic murder mystery."
A dark, sensual neo-noir, THE MONKEY'S MASK centers around Jill (Susie
Porter), a 28-year old private detective hired to investigate the
disappearance of Mickey (Abbie Cornish), a young aspiring poet.
Jill falls quick and hard for alluring femme fatale Diana (Kelly McGillis),
Mickey's mature and sexually aggressive poetry teacher.
With Diana as her guide, Jill descends into the depths of the surprisingly
sordid poetry world, looking for clues to the murder. As she tries to unravel
the mystery, Jill is compromised by her passionate involvement with Diana,
until finally her own life is in danger.
Moving easily between Diana's light, airy penthouse to the dark club
settings of urban poetry slams, THE MONKEY'S MASK is an atmospheric mystery
thriller that defies conventions, with both its female detective protagonist
and steamy lesbian romance.
Born in England, but currently living in Australia, Samantha Lang's first
feature film, THE WELL, was in the official competition at the 50th Cannes
Film Festival and was released in the US last year.
I was invited to cover the press screening which has not yet taken place.
