Jo and all,
Hi Jo hope you are well.

By their omission, I presume that Basic Grade Podiatrists are NOT allowed to
apply biomechanics skills to their patients. Perhaps I am reading too much
into your posting, but as an educator of undergraduates I find this rather
alarming. If an individual is not allowed to use their skills, they will
surely lose them. Perhaps the professional body should provide better
guidelines for Basic Grade positions- so that they are ALL truly rotational-
providing the recently qualified with a "taste" of all aspects of podiatry,
allowing them to use what they have learned? I know some Trusts already do
this- so why not all? Is this why I hear of so many recently qualified
students getting disillusioned with their jobs? Alternatively, perhaps we as
educators must look at what we are teaching- are we teaching undergraduates
too much, or the wrong things? Personally I don't think so, from where I'm
sitting: the role of the podiatrist is changing, patient demographics are
changing, and we need to reflect this in the courses we are teaching, but
this is of little use if the recently qualified are denied using these
skills. But hey, what do I know?- I don't work in the real world. How long
does someone need to be qualified before they are allowed to use all of the
skills they gained at college? Sorry if I'm blowing off steam needlessly,
but to quote Sid- "What say you?"
Best wishes,
Simon
