Extra-corporeal shock wave therapy (ECSWT) seems to be gaining credibility
amongst the medical frat, mostly (I think) because its a relatively easy
treatment for a medical practitioner to instigate for heel pain cases.
In Australia I believe moves are well underway by lithotripsy providers to
gain a Medicare item for this treatment in musculoskeletal pain, despite a
paucity of RCT's on this therapy (how this infuriates me again and again!).
Our local centre here in Brisbane is advertising this treatment to
podiatrists and physio's as an alternative to surgery in recalcitrant
plantar fasciitis that has not responded to standard care.
Several contraindications, such as open growth plates etc are to be
considered, but my anecdotal experience has been of fair to midland results.
