I recently saw a worker with children with severe emotional difficulties who
had a what sounded like a typical case of herpes stomatitis back in January.
This was finally diagnosed (clinically) by her dentist after her ulcerated
mouth had failed to respond to amoxicillin prescribed by her doctor. No
scrapings or antibody titres were taken, but she is a sensible woman (RGN)
and has no previous history of cold sores. She gives a good history.
She recalls that 2 weeks previously she was spat at by a child who was
subsequently noticed to have cold sores.
A causal relationaship does seem plausible. Has anyone any similar
experience?
