For those who did not retain the attached, here are the very good
instructions for participating in this list.

WELCOME TO MAILBASE

WHAT IS MAILBASE?
------------------
Mailbase is a national service which runs electronic discussion lists for
UK academics and support staff. It has a website at:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/
HOW DO I FIND A MAILBASE LIST?
------------------------------
All open (publicly available) Mailbase lists appear on the web.
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/
You can search for a relevant list by keyword, or by subject.
HOW DO I JOIN A MAILBASE LIST?
------------------------------
- Send a message to [log in to unmask] (a program)
- In the BODY of the message type:
join listname firstname lastname
- Replace listname with the name of the list you want to join and type
your own personal names instead of 'firstname' and 'lastname'
- If your email has a signature at the end, type
stop
on the next line. Otherwise the Mailbase computer will try to read the
signature and send you an error message.
For example:
-------------------------------------------------
To: [log in to unmask]
Subject: test (you may leave this blank)

Body of message:

join mailbase-news Jane M. Smith
stop
-------------------------------------------------
HOW DO I CONFIRM?
-----------------
After you send a join command, you'll get an automatic message from the
Mailbase computer, containing a unique code. You'll have to confirm your
membership by sending a message like this to [log in to unmask]
accept xxxxxx
where xxx is the code sent to you. This allows the Mailbase computer
to check your email address.
HOW DO I LEAVE A MAILBASE LIST?
-------------------------------
To leave a list, send a message to [log in to unmask]
and in the BODY of the message type:
leave listname
where listname is the name of the list you want to leave.
WHAT IF I HAVE PROBLEMS LEAVING THE LIST?
------------------------------------------
If you try to send a 'leave' command from a different address than the
one you joined with, then the Mailbase software will not recognise you.
Seek help from the listowner (see below) or the Mailbase
Helpline ([log in to unmask])
HOW CAN I SEND A MESSAGE TO THE LIST?
-------------------------------------
Send a message to:
[log in to unmask]
but type the name of the list instead of the 'listname'
For example, to send a message to the newusers list
-------------------------------------------------
To: [log in to unmask]
Subject: Hello everyone

Body of message:

This is my first message to Mailbase ...
-------------------------------------------------
When you send a message to the list, all the members will get a copy.
Please consider your words carefully before posting.
ARE THERE ANY RULES ABOUT THE TYPE OF MESSAGE I CAN POST?
--------------------------------------------
Yes! Mailbase has an "Acceptable Use Policy", and you must abide by this
policy when you send a message to any Mailbase list, so please read it
carefully.
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/aup.html
For example, before you send a promotional message, such as a
conference announcement or job advert, you should ask the listowner.
We also have some practical guidelines, or "list etiquette" which might
help beginners:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/guidelines.html
ARE MY MESSAGES STORED AT MAILBASE?
------------------------------------
Messages sent to Mailbase lists are archived. These archives can be
retrieved by any list member, and may also be available on the web.
As a member of a Mailbase list you agree that Mailbase can archive any
message you send to the list, although you retain copyright in that
message. If this is not acceptable, THEN DO NOT POST ANY MESSAGES
TO THE LIST.
HOW CAN I READ OLD MESSAGES?
----------------------------
All open (public) Mailbase lists have a webpage where you can read
archived messages, get information about the list, retrieve files, and
look at membership details (if the owner permits).
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/listname/
Replace listname with the name of your list.
HOW CAN I REACH THE LIST OWNER?
--------------------------------
To reach a list owner, who manages the list, send a message to:
[log in to unmask]
Replace listname with the name of the list.
HOW DO I STOP MESSAGES WHEN I GO ON HOLIDAY?
--------------------------------------------
Send a message to [log in to unmask], and in
the BODY of the message type:
suspend mail listname
But replace listname with the name of your list
When you return, send this message to start getting mail again:
resume mail listname
You can suspend, and resume, mail from ALL mailbase lists
by sending the messages:
suspend mail all
or resume mail all
WHICH LISTS DO I BELONG TO?
---------------------------
If you've forgotten which lists you've joined, send this
message to [log in to unmask]
list me
HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT OTHER LIST MEMBERS?
--------------------------------------------
You can get the names and addresses of other list members by
sending this message to [log in to unmask] (replacing
listname with the name of your list).
review listname
WILL MAILBASE SELL MY EMAIL ADDRESS?
-------------------------------------
NO! Mailbase will NEVER sell or exchange users' names or email
addresses to any other party or organisation.
However, other list members will be able to find out your email
address using the 'review' command (see above). The listowner
may also put membership details on the web where everyone can
see them.
HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MAILBASE?
---------------------------------------
The Mailbase User Guide is on the web:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/user.html
And you can read FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) at:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/user-faq.html
You can get both these documents by email.
Send this message to [log in to unmask]
get mailbase user-guide
get mailbase user-faq
HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT CLOSED LISTS?
-------------------------------------
Closed (restricted access) lists do not appear on the
Mailbase web. You have to use email commands to find out
about them.
Use "find lists keyword" to search for lists which have a
particular keyword in the listname or description.
E.g. find lists french
If you are a member of a closed list, you can also retrieve
files and archives by email.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I NEED HELP?
--------------------------------
Send an email message to the Mailbase Helpline at:
[log in to unmask]
And we'll do our best to help you
HOW DO I SEND A COMMAND TO MAILBASE?
------------------------------------
You have to send a message to
[log in to unmask]
You can leave the subject blank (the computer doesn't
read that), and put the command in the body of the message.
This message will be read by a computer, not a person, so
please type it carefully and don't include any extra text.
