The Times yesterday devoted a whole page to the salmon story, and a leading
article. It mentioned that the analysis was of 12 fish from amongst the 359
fish farms in Scotland. There was no information on the variation from fish
to fish. Nor was there any information on analytical error (but the
analysis was done by EPA in Mississippi). I think that this is an
outstanding example of how research should not be published. We do not know
whether the results indicate a possible risk to health or not - there is
simply not enough information - but 12 fish seems a very small sample and we
do know that the story will cause economic damage.
