Aesthetics - first thoughts:-
What are the aesthetic qualities which are implicit to the medium, and its
transmission?
I have phrased my question thus in order to emphasise that it is the
facility and variety of encoding methods available which is important for
digital transmission and presentation as opposed to analogue.
Yes, it is about truth and integrity, but it is also about knowledge and
choice. Artists need to know more about these methods in order to exploit
them for art purposes. For example, the blocks when fast forwarding and the
transmission just of the parts which change are not only useful in data
compression but have analogies (sic) to the way the brain views and
recognises an image and movement. I understand that there is work in
progress on defining image movement in terms of mathematical formulae which
will allow both more compression and animation, in 3D.
We won't get to the full sensations of throwing real tomatoes, but we
approach that with 3D video projection and sound.
