This is not strictly new media related, but i remember when i was in
glasgow as a student in the early 90's there was a spate of curatorial
projects using domestic spaces. one guy curated a series of week-long shows
in a derelict hotel that he lived in, including work by stewart & smith and
david shrigley. I also vaguely remember someone curating a show for the top
of their wardrobe, but i'm not sure if that was aprocryphal or not. Kirsty
Ogg carried this on when she went to norfolk and curated a series of shows
at her flat.
Thinking about it, I'm amazed net.art hasn't picked up on this tactic of
showing in domestic spaces, as it is ergonomically more suited to the
experience of browsing than the gallery. There's also scope for making
'site-specific' work that uses the qualities of the domestic space to
extend the content outside of the browswer space.
hey - my house in leeds might be empty for a few months in dec/jan. maybe i
should curate a net.art show there before it gets sold.... ;-)
