Welcome to the discussion list about curating new media art. In order
to start off discussion, each month there will be a theme, with
invited respondents. All list members are welcome to participate, and
are also welcome to start off discussion on other subjects.
For your information, April's theme will be 'Independent New Media,
Small Organisations, and Activist Art', and May's will concern
'Audience, Aesthetics and Archiving' (this intersects with the Baltic
Seminar on New Media Curating 10-12th May

MARCH: BIG MEDIA ART: NEW MEDIA ART IN LARGE INSTITUTIONS
(if responding to this theme, keep "Big Media Art" in the "Subject"
heading of your email).
Opening comments:
Recently, large art institutions such as the Tate, the Whitney and
San Francisco MOMA have been including new media art in major events.
What interesting things happen, and what can we learn? Is it "First
Contact" or "First Cannons"? Big Art or Big Technology?
When Matthew Gansallo commissioned a web artwork for the Tate
(London), which appropriated the Tate publicity site, it created a
very interesting relationship with the marketing department, and
public reactions which ranged from 'how scary!' to 'it's good the
Tate is large enough to say what you want.' [See
<http://www.newmedia.sunderland.ac.uk/crumb/phase2/nmc_intvw_gansallo.html>]
Should big institutions be large enough to say what they want, or are
they prey to equally big PR considerations? Do they provide the big
budgets needed for ambitious technology, or are they trying to fit
new media into old boxes? What useful experiences can be shared from
these 'first contacts'?
Invited respondents this month include: Matthew Gansallo, Sandy
Nairne, Barbara London, Julie Lazar, Jennifer Crowe, and delegates
from Museums and the Web 2001 conference.

We hope you'll respond with useful, practical, or personal
experiences which might help curators deal with the challenges of new
media art!
yours,
Beryl
