dear .... ,
just back from Vienna ......
i am asthonished not to find more 'new-media-curators'
mails in my mail hieve.
observation and experience (some notes)
i wonder whether there have been initiated some collaborations between big
museums and departements of psychogoly (studies of perception) to observe
the 'handling' of new media art in museums (just an idea).
my own observations of 'Haus der Musik' in Vienna. (i visited it with a
class of students 15 to 17 years old - but at the same time there have been
visitors with the age of 8 to ......).
'Haus der Musik' is a multi media house opened summer 2000.
the different installations are more 'information about audielle perception'
than 'art' (somehow/-times they are both).
visitors tended to spend more time in front of the touch screens than in
front of other multi media installations (self-running like movies) - esp.
when they have to wear headphones (a unique effect that you can observe
everywhere - walkman..... )
and have to use microphones. in my opinion the touch screens are too small
(15") to get full concentration, esp. when not mounted on a wall where the
visitor is less influenced by action beside (wide angle perception) in the
room. the younger the people the more they act with there own body while the
older ones perferred the common 'computer' experience (like at home or in
the office).
unfortunately the touchscreens seem to have lost some functionality after
half a year of steady use (you have to press hard or often).
in my view in presenting media the main problem are
that you have to handle very different user habits
(from novice to advanced users of different ages)
and even more complicated (but this depends of your own sight on art ---
what you want to get) the different habits in handling different media
(painting, ............., video and interactive works - where esp. in new
media works these habits (can) work against the piece itself.)
one aspect - ie. new media is often seen as a 'rush', 'flicker', 'sensation'
instead of a contemplative (and a rush..... is always short).
some more notes
i can imagine exhibition concepts where you can create a dramaturgy of
(potential) experience without only 'using' n.m.art thru the arrangements or
by working closer together with the artists.
thinking at 'intimate' places - why not create individual rooms/cells by
artists or combine a design exhibition with a n.m.art one.
best
reiner
