Curating New Media

The Curatorial Resource for Upstart Media Bliss (CRUMB), Critical Media
and the Ottawa Art Gallery invites you to a one-day public forum on the
topic of the current state of new media art and its place within our
galleries and production/distribution centers.
Following from recent seminars on new media curating co-hosted by CRUMB
in England (Baltic, May 2001; Media Centre Huddersfield, October 2001),
this symposium - jointly organized by Sarah Cook and Nina Czegledy -
offers a timely opportunity to consider and discuss among peers the
issues arising from the burgeoning field of new media. The symposium
will highlight some of the fissures and opportunities that have arisen
in the shifting ground between traditional, institutionally-based
curatorial practice and new models less bound to specific locales. The
event will be comprised of three sessions, centered on the key areas of
Production, Distribution, and Consumption. Each session will feature two
guest speakers, followed by open discussion. While focusing on Canadian
examples, the speakers will address:
the relationship of art to industry
convergence media
the artist as curator role
local community education versus global network dissemination
museums and collections
the creation of new media production centers in regional galleries
Invited speakers include: Jean Gagnon (Daniel Langlois Foundation), Ana
Serrano (Bell Habitat, Canadian Film Centre), Kathleen Perrie-Adams
(Interaccess Gallery), Nichola Feldmann-Kiss (artist) and others TBC.
The symposium is preceded on Saturday evening by an e-lounge at the old City
Registry Building featuring new media work, artists’ demonstrations, the
launch of the Information Technology Association of Canada’s Art and IT
website and other activities.
Attendance at the symposium is free, but spaces are limited.
