Hi List

Please find details below for the Unencoded Net Art project and events at
Folly:

On-line chat discussion - Oct / Nov / Dec
One Day Forum - December 8th
Launch Unencoded web projects online - Jan 2002

UNENCODED

Unencoded is a Folly initiative to raise the profile of artists using new
media.

The name Unencoded is derived from computing terminology - when information
is stored within a computer it becomes encoded and may be referred to as
digital media. Unencoded is the reverse of this process. The Unencoded
initiative at Folly aims to make the creative use of digital media more open
and accessible.

You are invited to attend an artists discussion to launch the Unencoded Net
Art project. The event is free but prior warning of attendance would be
appreciated as numbers are limited.

Six artists have been selected to take part in the Unencoded Net Art project
at Folly during October, November, December. The six artists will produce
six pieces of new work specifically for the internet - Net Art.

The launch presentation will take place on Saturday September 29th from 2pm
to 5pm to be held at the Meeting Room, Duke's Theatre, Moor Lane, Lancaster.

Taylor Nuttall, Director of Folly will introduce the Unencoded Net Art
Project and participants.

Maria Stukoff has been awarded the Unencoded Net Art Commission, Maria will
present her recent work and proposed plans for the project. Maria's new work
will draw on previous experience as a photographer and recent video
techniques exploring telecommunications technologies and the body.

5 artists have been awarded the Unencoded Net Art Bursary and will also
receive technical support in the realisation of their project. The artists
will be introduced at the presentation launch and include

Hester Reeve,

Ehid Nir,

Joshua Howe,

Margaret Barber,

Arlene Garret.

The introductory session is intended to be informal in format and will be
concluded with a discussion relating to the participants ideas for the
project. All are welcome to contribute to the discussion. This is an
opportunity for other artists to take part in the project and to join the
unencoded chat sessions.

During the next 3 months a series of online discussions will take place on a
regular basis involving all six artists and invited guests - log on to the
Folly website to participate.

Logical Operators - a one day forum on Saturday December 8th is intended to
round up the Unencoded Net Art commission and Bursary - it will consist of
three sessions from 11am to 5pm. The day will focus on how artists negotiate
working with New Media and its affect on their strategies for creative
thinking. This can include for example the multiple roles under which we
operate.

Participants amongst others will include the Unencoded Net Art bursary
artists and commissioned artist Maria Stukoff also - Active Ingredient, Paul
Sermon, Karen Guthrie, Chris Meigh Andrews, John Hyatt, Kathy Rae Huffman,
Clive Gillman - the final programme will be published shortly.
