16 april
hi all,
i've been connected to this list for quite some time now, and am quite
impressed with the variety and level of debate.
i am head of an experimental post-graduate [now re-named to 'post-academic']
theory department at the jan van eyck akademie. every year we take 8 people
in theory [there are two other departments, fine art and design, who also
take up to 8 each]. so at any one time there are approximately 48
researchers [2 year stay/ 16 per department, etc]. the akad. begins in
january and goes annually, as distinct from starting in sept or oct.
in the theory department, projects are accepted from a broad, but intensive
re-think around 'contemporary' or post-post modern [very dull, this 'post'
business, but whatever]. i accept work that principally is written based,
but can also be produced via sound, web, video, metal sculpture, wood and
etc. this akademie has first rate studio/equipment; it is a mad sort of
international hub, and at the same time rather 'monasterial'. on friday we
found out from the ministry that bursaries, full bursaries would be granted
to each researcher, solving the problem, especially for the international
researchers, of how to fund their stay.
interested? the deadline is june 1, but it might make sense for you contact
me at my [log in to unmask] site [private list]. or at least check out
the weblink [which is still under construction but it may give you a kind of
general idea of all three departments]. http://www.janvaneyck.nl or
check out the enlightenment symposium that was put on by theory:
http://www.janvaneyck.nl/enlightenment [the last part of the symposium is
intended to be carrried out in tokyo, within the next two years].
we publish a bi-annual journal called 'the issues in contemporary culture and
aesthetics', and [if you haven't seen it], it breaks with the notion of
'visual culture' and moves into questions / play/ expressions of
visual/acoustic poetics. [or as the we put it "critical discourses covering
the fields of philosophy, politics, aesthetics, and the technologies of
art"]. the advising researchers ['tutors'] have included in the past two:
Sue Golding [johnny de philo] Head {philosopher, film/sound director/writer
{blood poetics} from London}; Mieke Bal [cultural theorist/Amsterdam]; Ecke
Bonk [designer/systems {DNA} theorist Karlsrhue/Vienna]; Nadezda Cacinovic
[philosopher: Zagreb]; William Haver [queer theorist/historian asian
studies/experimental classical musician, New York]; Sylvere Lotringer
[cultural theorist, writer/publisher; New York/LA/Paris]; Sarat Maharaj [art
historian/curator documenta xi/xenosonic philosopher; London]; Eva Meyer
[philosopher, filmmaker, writer, Berlin].
given the kind of discussion i've been reading on the web through this site,
i just thought some of you might be interested. you certainly read as if
you've got the nerve, discipline, curiousity. If you're willing to risk, i'm
interested.
kind regards
johnny de philo [sue golding]
