APRIL 'Theme of the Month':
Independent new media, small organisations, and activist art.
Last month we talked about big institutions, and some difficulties in
dealing with new media which have been characterised as fast-moving,
artist-run, anarchistic and young. Some have argued that small
organisations (or non-institutionalised contexts) are the natural
habitat of the new media art animal, but is this true?
What are the difficulties of working with new media art in these
contexts? Where does the hype about 'new audience' end and the real
audience begin? How do you find the best independent net.art? Is
low-tech the real-tech? Is web activism a White Flight into
cyberspace? (see

Invited respondents: Natalie Bookchin, Kathy Rae Huffman,
irational, Brendan Jackson, Grant Kester, Gilane Tawadros.
