Hi Matt,
A lot of alternative spaces have been used here in Manila for exhibition.
Also here the shopping malls have galleries - the most popular, a large
mall has an Art Walk at the fourth level. When galleries weren't found in
the malls some ten years back, we had the exhibitions in unfurnished and
unoccupied shops, and in the lobby of a large shopping mall. This can be a
curator's nightmare as a lot and all sorts of people go there.
But - like you said, not strictly new media. I suppose new media
installation requires more security to be exposed or let alone in certain
spaces. A television monitor was stolen once in video installation in a
home-based gallery here.
I've heard of artist's wallpapers and screensavers exhibited at a bar and
cybercafe couple years back - they placed the computers near the glass
windows so from the outside the works blended with evening city neons and
park lights.
