Sorry for cross posting, but I thought this relevant to each of these lists...

This is a most interesting post given the number of lists that have recently
been discussing curatorial practice in the area of new media, including net and
web based work. I, for one, have always been in favour of providing (at least a
nominal - depending on the situation) fee for artists when their work is
included in an exhibition context - it is, after all, contextualising work in an
'exhibition' context. Just as you would pay a screening fee for any other form
of screen based works - and particularly, as in this instance, when the curator
is being paid a fee for putting the program together. And do you think any of
the other artists nominated for inclusion in the show would agree to exhibit
without being paid a fee?!

But what I *really* want to see is the web based work from 1993 that is being
including in the show!!

Dear Jodi,

my name is Valentina Tanni and I'm working on an exhibition called "Media
connection" that will take place in Rome (Italy) in June. "Media
connection" deals with the relationship beetwen art and technology and
presents works by several artists from around the world like Doug Aitken,
Francis Alys, Arman, Gary Hill,Antoni Muntadas, Yoko Ono, Tony Oursler,
Nam June Paik, Pipilotti Rist, Wolfgang Staehle and many more.

The curator of the exhibition, Gianni Romano, asked me to prepare a "WEB
section" to introduce people to Net Art. I selected 15 webprojects (dated
from 1993 to 2001) to offer an historical overview and to show the
different ways to work and create on the net.

I would like to include your work "www.jodi.org" in my selection and I
kindly ask for your authorization.

The web part of the exhibition will be only virtual, we are going to put
the link to the project and a brief description of the work in a cd rom
and on our website.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon Best regards

Valentina Tanni

Dear Jodi,

Probably I didn't explain it the right way, but we are not organizing a
net art show, we'll just insert a link to your website, with an image and
a brief descriprion of your work. The goal of this initiative is to offer
a little guide to the most important net art works.

>what is the artist fee?

Sorry, there's no fee, c'mon it's just a link!

Dear Valentina Tanni

of course u can do it
everybody is free to make a link

but

can you please tell me:
Do you get money for making virtual exhibitions?
Do web section curators get money?
Or you do it for free because it is a virtual exhibition?

Of course I can answer to your questions:
I get money for choosing the works and for writing texts for the
catalogue. I'm writing an essay on Net Art and brief comments on all the
projects I selected.

Thanks very much for your authorization.

Best regards
Valentina Tanni
