Definitely a very interesting Forum.
I have started reading the proceedings, which are well presented and have
relevant content.
I am working for the DG Joint Research Centre (JRC), which gives support to
the policy DGs in Brussels. In our unit, we give support mainly to the
Environment DG. The project I am in is entitled NEDIES: Natural and
Environmental Disaster Information Exchange System. This is our old website:
http://nedies.jrc.it
A new and updated website will hopefully be ready by early autumn 2001.
I am also investigating on which areas can a European-wide Policy in Natural
Disaster Management be beneficial to the European Community.
Our sector mainly deals with Risk of Natural Disasters. Natural Disaster
Management is a very interdisciplinary field. Thus, when it comes to
policy-making in a European-wide scale it can get very complicated, and a
single directive will not be possible due to the differences in:
- structure of institutions
- who does what (i.e. the tasks carried out by the corresponding actor in
one country differs from that in another)
etc.
However, there are enough similarities to identify areas where a
European-wide approach could be beneficial to all, such as in the areas of:
- Information dissemination
- Information exchange mechanisms
- Tourism
These are what I have come up with at this moment, but I am sure that there
are other areas of synergy. Have any of you got any ideas/suggestions?
