El Parker:
Why Vanuatu ? Just about anywhere else has better information (certainly in
my library !) However, a random collection:
The New Zealand Meteorological Service might be a start; eg: I have a copy
of "Tropical Storms and Hurricanes in the Southwest Pacific Nov 1939 to Apr
1969" by I S Kerr. 1976.
You could try the USOFDA "Disaster Histories".
Also old UNDRO publications; eg: Prelim Study on the Identification of
Disaster-prone Countries Based on Economic Impact" 1990.
And if you wanted to go even further ante-webb, Bob McKerrow produced a
report in 1976 for the LRCS which included Vanuatu "Disaster Preparedness
Survey: South West Pacific Region".
A paper at the Eighth Inter-schools Conference on Development (1991) was
"Tropical Cyclones and Island States" which also included Vanuatu (Lewis,
James) subsequently published by ITDG (seem to have mislaid the reference
on that one !).
I make no apology for these ante-webb references. Return period analysis
surely benefits from historical perspective ?
Get me up to Coventry and I will carry them (and more) with me ?
Best Wishes to you and your students,
James Lewis
