Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois, is seeking a
postdoctoral associate to work with Dr. Branko Ruscic in the Chemistry
Division.
Possible projects include:
A) Research on free radicals and other transient and/or metastable species
in gas phase relevant in combustion, atmospheric chemistry, etc., using
conventional, synchrotron, and laser based photoionization mass spectrometry
techniques, photoelectron spectroscopy and their variations, such as TPES,
PEPICO, ZEKE, MATI, etc.
Eligible applicants for this project are those who have received a Ph.D. in
chemistry or physics within the last three years and have a very strong
background in lasers, high vacuum technology and computers. Previous direct
experience with photoionization mass spectrometry or photoelectron
spectroscopy is highly desirable, but not required. However, extensive
expertise in lasers, including non-linear generation of VUV light by
tripling and/or sum and difference generation is essential. Although the
instrumentation for these experiments exists and is fully working, the
nature of the research that is being conducted requires goal-oriented
modifications of equipment as well as periodic development of new
capabilities. Hence, thorough understanding of the process involved in
interfacing computers to experimental equipment as well as extensive
programming skills (C++, LabView) are essential.
B) Algorithm and software development in conjuction with "active"
thermochemical tables.
Eligible applicants for this project are those who have received a Ph.D. in
chemistry, physics, or applied mathematics within the last three years and
posses a strong background in modern computing tecnologies. This includes
not only thorough familiarity with standard programming languages, such as
Visual C++, Visual Basic, FORTRAN, etc., but also good command of new and
emerging internet authoring technologies, such as XML, XHTML, WebDAV,
distributed computing, web collaboration, etc. Detailed understanding of
thermochemistry and theoretical aspects of spectroscopy is highly desirable.
Applicants are invited to e-mail ([log in to unmask]), fax (1-630-252-4081) or
snail-mail (Dr. Branko Ruscic, Chemistry Division, Argonne National
Laboratory, 9700 S. Cass Ave, Argonne, IL 60439-4831, USA) a resume and
names of three references, with an indication of the position (A or B) that
they are applying for.
