Hi ian,
we are about to ask the NHSCCC to create codes for patient's ethnic group is Somali and Yemeni.
we want the same locally responsive codes which we can code back into the census categories for national comparison etc.
as long as the codes can be worked back into the 16+1 cats there is no problem.
you may be interested to know that I have had 150 new codes created (for the March release)
125 for Patient was born in country X
2 codes for Patient needs/does not need interpreter
and c 25 for patient's main spoken language is XXX
if anybody wants a list of these new categories let me know and I will mail an excel sheet to you

Croydon are about to agree the use of two local codes to be used in
addition to the basic 16+1 codes. These are Sri Lankan and Black British.
These groups were chosen as they had both health needs or access
requirements relating to ethnicity and form a large enough minority of
Croydon's population. There were pressures to both increase and decrease
the number of codes to be used but this represents (what I believe will be)
the negotiated settlement.
Black British is already one of the 'long list' (code PC) - Croydon has
promoted it to the short list. Sri Lankan is currently included in
Indian but we wish to separately identify them. We have chosen HA as a
suitable code in the right place in the hierarchy. Croydon HA will be
asking providers with whom it does a lot of business to use these extra
categories in their collection procedures.
There is no central registry of made-up codes which could lead to problems
later. Providers may be faced with the task of synthesising the short lists
of purchasers into a short of medium list. Specialist centres who service a
number of purchasers could end up with a short list longer than the long list.
Do others know of plans to include local codes in ethnic category collections?
