I am about to carry out a review of access to short-term breaks for disabled
children and their families from minority ethnic groups. This will involve
reviewing literature, practice and other initiatives, with a view to
identifying need and recommending action. The work is likely to focus on
families of African, African-Caribbean and South Asian origins, and to
follow on from recent research by Chamba, Ahmad et al (1999) 'On the Edge:
Minority ethnic families caring for a severely disabled child' published for
the Joseph Rowntree Foundation by the Policy Press. It aims to cover the
whole of the UK, but is likely to feature England and Wales in more detail.
Please write to me off-list if you have interest and experience in this area
of work, have a contribution to make and would like to stay in touch. A
networking event is planned for later in the year.
