This new book has just come out and in my opinion is well written and worth
collecting
The South Yorkshire Coalfield - A History and Development, Alan Hill. PB .
This book follows the history of coal mining in the area running from
Barnsley to Sheffield and Doncaster which once held some of the richest
seams in England from Roman times to today where little remains as evidence
of the industry which once employed thousands. It traces advances in
technology, as well as recording disasters, and describing the difficult
working conditions which led to explosions, flooding and roof collapses. The
book also the final chapters in chronicling the opening of collieries and
gives details of each Pit supported with photos and details of each
individual site. It well researched , informative and generally easy to read
and understand. £19.50 including post and packing
