I am doing some work with Forest Enterprise on the remains of an engine
house which once contained an inverted Cornish beam engine described in
the sale catalogue as:
'Cornish Beam Pumping Engine. Single 76in, cylinder, 12ft stroke, with
steam chest, on massive girder and column supports. Under beam, 30ft
long by 7ft. centre diameter, with balancing tank.'
The iron mine in question was Fair Play in the Forest of Dean where much
development work was done, a lot of money spent, but no ore raised.
Does anybody have any details of the engine's makers?
Does anybody have any information on the mine itself?
many thanks
