Earlier this year I was asked by the Welsh Mines Society to monitor efforts
by the Welsh Assembly to develop a compact between the voluntary sector and
the statutory agencies responsible for the environment. As a society we are
interested in any action which would help protect the mining landscapes of
Wales, and increased consultation by bodies like the Environment Agency
could be beneficial to our interests.
The idea of a compact was explored at a meeting at Llandrindod earlier in
the year and a consultation document has been issued. Copies of the
document are available on the Web at http://www.wcva.org.uk and
http://www.forestry.gov.uk
If you go to the former the URL is http://www.wcva.org.uk/working/index.html
- select 'Environment' and download the document on MS Word format.
My view is that this is just talk with little prospect of action. What is
needed now, not tomorrow, is better consultation with the statutory bodies.
We need to know what they are doing, when they are going to do it, and have
sufficient time to react to their proposals.
Those list members with an interest in the landscape / environmental aspects
of mining in Wales might like to read the document and comment to me or
directly to the organising body at [log in to unmask]
