Philip, I suppose it depends exactly what he means by entrance, i.e. does he
just mean for miners access. If so there are other 'types' of shaft of
course. e.g.
Pumping Shaft
Ventilation Shaft, could include non mining e.g. for road tunnels.
The following are also excavations to or from the surface which I don't think
have been mentioned yet. I am afraid that I cannot think of anything other
than the standard 'shaft' which would be called a shaft.
Open Stope, where the vein has been removed to the surface.
Trial, where a 'hole' has been made but abandoned.
Collar, the top of a shaft, usually referring to the stonework etc. around
the edge of the opening.
