Can anyone help me with the meaning of the term 'germans' please. It appears in the following context - Mines Inspector Atkinson's 1900 report on the Midlands area discusses the introduction of electricity for detonating shots, but notes that some mines in Shropshire are still using germans. Have quickly dismissed the picture of a Bavarian or Saxon being used to initiate the explosion is some way, am I right in thinking that german is a local term for a squib?
