Hi,
Roger Burt mentioned articles by Charles Harvey and John Press in the
Economic History Review, but there is also a volume of Business History
(Vol.32, No.3, July 1990, edited by Harvey and Press) dedicated to:-
International competition and industrial change: Esssays in the
history of mining and metallurgy, 1800-1950.
The full reference for Charles's book is:-
Harvey, C.E. The Rio Tinto Company: An Economic History of a Leading
International Mining Concern 1873-1954 (Penzance, Alison Hodge, 1981),
Raf, are you aware of Pat Hudson's work on regional development? Although
not directly concerned with mining, I found her approach stimulating and not
full of the sweeping generalisations that Economic Historians are prone to
make (whoops, and me too).
Hudson, P. (Ed) Regions and Industries: A perspective on the industrial
revolution in Britain (Cambridge University Press, 1989).
Hudson, P. The Genesis of Industrial Capital: A study of the West Riding
wool textile industry c.1750-1850 (Cambridge University Press, 1986).
Roger's response to your suggestion (The impact of non-ferrous metal mining
on regional economic development - Spain and Britain compared) sounds a very
interesting one.
Regards,
Mike Gill
