Louis was probably Henry Louis Professor of Mining at Armstrong College,
Newcastle upon Tyne (Later U. of Newcastle) and a prolific writer on
metalliferous mining. Phiilips may have beenJohn Phillips the Professor of
Geology at Oxford. He lived 1800-74 so the reference of 1898 would refer to
an earlier work or Louis may have given posthumous credit.

Subject: Nineteenth century writings
Hi
I have two references from a printed but unpublished document of c1898 on
Shropshire mining.
1. An article on Smelting by Salmon (who had a very talented wife) for the
Journal of the French Society of Arts, and
2. Phillips and Louis 'Ore deposits'. Given that a Phillips and a Lewis were
partners in Grit and Gravels Mines in the second quarter of the 19th century I
wonder about the spellings of the names.
Can anyone cast any light on either of these please?
